89 At the end-stage there arises a new cult of the word. It is a mistake, Bely asserts, to regard the cult of the word as a cause of decadence, or as itself a decadent phenomenon. It is, on the contrary, a reaction against decadence and the harbinger of a new cultural renaissance. It is clear that at the end of the word's development, as Bely sees it, man finds himself in a situation very similar to that at the beginning; he is surrounded by a hostile and meaningless world, which he has to set about taming.

He enumerated twelve possible types of Weltanschauung, seven possible 'moods' and three possible 'tones'. Complete meaning emerges only from the combination of them all. 36 It is possible that this meticulous arithmetic is intended as an elaborate joke; but humour, it has to be admitted, is not a strong point of anthroposophy. The process of true cognition, which is to restore the unity of nature and thought, consists of three stages: imagination, inspiration and intuition. Imagination is the state in which one becomes aware of spiritual realities, inspiration that in which one perceives the relations between them, and intuition that in which one becomes united with them.
