89 At the end-stage there arises a new cult of the word. It is a mistake, Bely asserts, to regard the cult of the word as a cause of decadence, or as itself a decadent phenomenon. It is, on the contrary, a reaction against decadence and the harbinger of a new cultural renaissance. It is clear that at the end of the word's development, as Bely sees it, man finds himself in a situation very similar to that at the beginning; he is surrounded by a hostile and meaningless world, which he has to set about taming.
